If you are planning to visit Nepal sooner or later in future, it is always a wise thing to know something about this beautiful country. You will be at ease if you have pre-information about what you can expect; what you should do and should avoid doing. There are certain things to avoid in Nepal during your travel.

Whether you are coming for trekking, peak climbing, tours or any other purpose in Nepal, you will share some common grounds in terms of cultural belief system of the country. Although Nepal is a pretty liberal country where guests are considered gods, the country practices some deeply rooted cultural traditions. Respecting these cultural traditions of local people is an important matter for the visitors. It is always better to be informed on what you should avoid doing than knowing what you should do.  If you know what you should not be doing in a country, rest is for you.

Here on this post, we have tried to list out some of the things, which as visitors, you should avoid doing. Breaching these rules is not any criminal offense but it is to show respect to the people and their cultural tradition of the place you visit and to earn respect for yourself. Here are a few things for you to consider.

Using Left Hand

Using left hand, especially while giving something to somebody, is considered rude and uncivilized in Nepal. Right is right and left is always wrong in the cultural practice of Nepal.

Turning Buddhist Prayer Wheels Anti-clockwise

While visiting Nepal, you are going to come across several Buddhist temples with lots of prayer wheels. You might like to spin those wheels around just out of curiosity or because of your spiritual calling, always do so in clockwise direction. Going around any temple or spinning prayer wheels in anti-clockwise direction is against the established cultural tradition.

When you are on a Kathmandu Valley Tour or Trekking and touring around Nepal, you will come across such prayer wheels, temples and spiritual centers. Make sure to go around them in clockwise direction.

Showing Affection in Public

Nepali people are lovely people with a bit traditional thinking and shy nature. While you are travelling in Nepal with your beloved, you might want to express your affection to him/her. But make sure you are not doing anything like that in public. That will catch the eyes of public and will draw more stares and laughter at you creating some embarrassing situation. You definitely like to avoid creating anything that is embarrassing.

Giving Chocolates or Money to People

When you go trekking in Nepal, it is pretty common to hear small children asking for chocolates. But it is always in the welfare of those kids if you avoid giving them chocolates. You may see beggars on street asking for money but you would like to stay away from them.

Accepting some Enticing yet Skeptical Offers from Street

As you walk along the city streets, you may come across some people who might have some enticing offers for you. Avoid those offers. Simply say “No” and walk away.

Trekking Alone

Some people consider trekking in Nepal easy and set off on the trek on their own. If there is anything stupid, it will be the decision to go trekking in Nepal alone. There are so many reasons why you should not trek alone. First, mountains of Nepal are completely unknown to you. Traversing trails simply with the help of a map would a tricky thing in the mountains. You may save a little money by trekking on your own but you are taking a huge risk of your life.

Racing in the Mountains

When people come to trek in Nepal, some of them want to show off how fast they can walk. But walking too fast in the mountains, especially with increasing elevation, is not a wise idea. Mountains are uncertain and you never know what waits ahead. Walking on a gentle and normal pace is the best way to trek in the mountains. You are not on a race but you are there to enjoy the walk and surroundings. So, act up to your purpose.

Although the list can go longer, we have summarized some very basic ‘should avoid’ ideas here. Hopefully this will be much more helpful for you on your visit to Nepal.
